Wetlands

How it works

Wetlands are a vital part of the ecosystem. Unique anaerobic conditions allow wetlands to carry out many different functions, one of which is water treatment. Here in Iowa, farming has had a drastic impact on wetlands.

How it helps

  • Provides habitat for wildlife - They are a prime habitat for breeding, nesting, feeding, and are cover for a variety of insects, reptiles, waterfowl, songbirds, and mammals.
  • Improves water quality - The natural cleansing powers of wetlands provides natural pollution control by removing agriculture chemicals and nutrients, sewage and animal waste. Wetlands also do a great job of filtering sediments and reducing erosion.
  • Wetlands can also reduce flooding by additional storage for rain water and surface drainage allowing water to percolate and evaporate - reducing peak flows.
  • Economics - Trying to farm frequently flooded areas can be expensive; a better economic choice may be to restore a wetland!
  • Wetlands are a great recreation source allowing you to enjoy the outdoors. They provide places to hunt, watch wildlife, photograph, and relax!
