Prescribed Grazing

How it works

Prescribed grazing utilized various tools to allow the controlled harvest of vegetation by grazing and can be applied to any pastureland, hay land, cropland, or other agriculture lands where grazing animals are managed. Rotational grazing techniques are used to control grazing patterns and reduce barren soils due to overgrazing. Fencing of streams and other water to exclude livestock also reduces streambank and shoreline erosion.

How it helps

  • Reduces surface runoff and improves filtration - reducing the amount of fecal matter, sediment, and other nutrients from entering streams.
  • Protects stream banks and shorelines from accelerated erosion.
  • Improves wildlife habitat by promoting healthy ecology and stable plant communities both upland and on bottomland.
  • Improves profitability by increasing vegetation yields and gains in livestock - more pounds equals more $!
