Forest Stand Improvement

How it works

This practice involves manipulating species of trees by cutting and killing selected trees and under story vegetation. This practice applies to forest land where competing vegetation hinders development of preferred species. The preferred species are identified and retained to achieve desired purpose. Spacing, density, and amounts of preferred species are carefully planned with consideration given to the whole ecosystem. Careful planning and timing will minimize impacts on nesting birds and other animals.

How it helps

  • Improves or sustains timber production.
  • Improves understory forage production, aesthetics, wildlife habitat, recreation, and hydrologic condition.
