Filter Strips
How it works
Strips of grass, trees and/or shrubs slow water flow and cause contaminants like sediment, chemicals and nutrients to collect in vegetation. Collected nutrients and chemicals are used by the vegetation, rather than entering water supplies. Filtered water then enters water bodies.
How it helps
- Ground cover reduces sedimentation delivered to streams, lakes, and other bodies of water.
- Vegetation filters chemicals and nutrients from water before entering water bodies, improving water quality.
- Improved water quality also improves fish and other biological habitat.
- Grass, trees, and shrubs provide cover for small birds and animals.
- The vegetative strip moves row crop operations farther from a stream, making maneuvering easier as well as reducing crop damage from high water.
